Meet Us Monday: Michael, House Leader

Posted: May 1, 2023 | Author: Real Life Staff

Meet Michael, a peer leader and recent graduate of REAL LIFE. He works for an electric equipment company to deliver electrical services as needed. He feels very lucky to have a great job he enjoys and he works very hard at his job.

It was not until later in life, after a divorce, that Michael turned to drugs. Since he was a Journeyman Electrician at the time, he was away from his daughter working on a Navy ship. This led to depression and ultimately drug use which caused him to be arrested while in Florida. Upon release he was going to be penniless and homeless. His classification officer told him about the REAL LIFE Program. He applied and was accepted.

REAL LIFE gave Michael an opportunity at life again and to reunite with his family. He says he was given the time he needed to adjust and catch his breath. He was also given time to obtain a job he was trained for. The REAL LIFE staff and his fellow Lifers were supportive; in particular, Ervin’s words of wisdom and Young’s no nonsense approach helped Michael with his success in the program.

As a Peer House Leader, Michael gets to give back by helping the residents of his house. He has formed a close bond with them and enjoys supporting them in their recovery.

His future goals include continuing to advance in his career and have his own home. Michael is also working on rebuilding his relationship with his daughter and family; he hopes to enjoy future plans with them.

His advice to others is listen to the staff. REAL LIFE gives you a chance to rebuild your life. Develop the good habits taught to you. Listen, be patient, put in the effort and time. Your success is not going to happen overnight and not without hard work. REAL LIFE gives you the tools to be a productive adult and member of society.

Keep up the great work, Michael!
