April is Alcohol Awareness Month, a health awareness campaign to help people understand the causes and treatments as well as reduce the stigma associated with alcoholism. Today, we’re highlighting some startling but important facts about alcohol abuse in the U.S.

Excessive alcohol use contributes to more than 140,000 deaths in the US each year, shortening the lives of those who die by an average of 26 years.

An estimated 1 in 5 deaths among US adults ages 20-49 is from excessive alcohol use; binge drinking is responsible for more than 40% of the deaths.

1 in 6 US adults binge drinks, with 25% doing so at least weekly.
