Honoring Jon Burkett

Over the years, Jon also built a meaningful relationship with REAL LIFE and Executive Director Sarah Scarbrough through his dedication to Richmond and the people who call it home.

“Jon didn’t just report the stories,” Sarah said. “He cared about the people behind them. He supported the community and victims of crime, and he went out of his way, often on evenings and weekends, to help people whose lives had been changed by tragedy.”

Our friends José and Marta are one example. After their family experienced unimaginable loss, Jon continued to support them beyond the story itself, staying connected and finding ways to help their family.

During his final broadcast on CBS 6, Jon shared, “Overnight hours, gruesome stories, they take a toll on you. And at 49, my mind, my body said it’s time for something new.”

After spending so many years telling some of Richmond’s hardest stories and being there for people during some of their most difficult moments, Jon has certainly earned some time to slow down and spend more time with his family.

Jon, thank you for 26 years of dedication to Richmond and for the care you’ve shown this community along the way. We can’t wait to see what’s next for you!
