Lessons from Real Talk with REAL LIFE

Posted: October 4, 2026 | Author: Real Life Staff
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and throughout the month, we’re highlighting Real Talk with REAL LIFE, our domestic violence prevention program.

REAL LIFE created the curriculum in collaboration with the Virginia Department of Health to work with individuals who have perpetrated domestic violence, helping them understand the factors that shape their behaviors and develop healthier patterns and relationships. Today, the program is offered in our recovery houses, through Project SAF, in the community, and in jails and prisons across Virginia.

Supporting survivors of domestic violence is critical. We also believe prevention means working to change the behaviors that cause harm in the first place.

Through Lessons from Real Talk with REAL LIFE, we’ll share some of what participants explore in the program, and we hope you’ll follow along.

Many of the ideas explored in Real Talk can be useful in our everyday lives, including how we communicate, understand our emotions, and navigate relationships.

First up: Understanding our reactions and what’s happening behind them.

  • Your Brain is Built to Protect You: Our brains are wired for survival. When something feels threatening, we react.
  • Sometimes We React Before We Think: Our brains can react to what’s happening around us before we have time to fully understand it.
  • What’s Underneath Anger? Fear and other emotions can fuel anger. Recognizing what’s really driving it can help us better understand our reactions.
  • A Reaction Doesn’t Have to Become an Action: We can learn to recognize anger, understand what’s driving it, and choose how we respond.
  • Start Paying Attention: The next time you feel angry, notice what happens first. What triggered it? What changed in your body? Building awareness is a first step toward changing your response.

“Understanding how I was built gave me compassion for myself and opened the door to transformation. Regulating emotions taught me that feelings aren’t my enemies, they’re my signals. I learned that anger, sadness and fear don’t make me weak or wrong.” — Real Talk with REAL LIFE Class Graduate
