Lessons from Real Talk with REAL LIFE Part 3
Posted: October 26, 2026 | Author: Real Life Staff
What you say and what someone else hears aren’t always the same.
For Domestic Violence Awareness Month, our Lessons from Real Talk with REAL LIFE series continues with Communicating Through Conflict.
Through Real Talk, participants explore how their experiences shape communication, recognize their own conflict styles, and develop skills for navigating disagreements in healthier ways.
From active listening to body language and conflict resolution, these are lessons we can all apply in our everyday relationships.
Listen Actively- Listening is more than hearing words. Give the other person your full attention, ask questions to better understand their perspective, and focus on what they’re saying instead of preparing your response.
How Do You Handle Conflict?- We all approach disagreements differently. Some avoid conflict, others compete or give in, while some compromise or collaborate. Recognizing your usual approach can help you make more intentional choices.
Work Towards Resolution- Start by identifying the source of the conflict and listening to each other’s perspectives. Separate facts from feelings, explore solutions both people can support, and clearly agree on a way forward.
Your Body Speaks, Too- Facial expressions, posture, and gestures can communicate feelings without a single word. Pay attention to your body language and whether it matches the message you’re trying to convey.
What You Say Isn’t Always What Someone Else Hears- Our life experiences shape how we interpret what others say. Distractions, emotions, and past experiences can change how a message is understood, even when that wasn’t the intention.
“I’ve also learned more about the things that trigger my anger and how to regulate my emotions. Effective communication plays a big part in this. If you learn to communicate properly, it can help with controlling your emotions.” — Real Talk with REAL LIFE Class Graduate
