A Personal Tribute to Jim Ukrop From Sarah Scarbrough

Jim was a second chance employer long before it was something people talked much about. I remember him raving about one of his employees who just happened to be a graduate of our jail program. He was also the very first donor to support our programming and re-entry work at the jail, and he continued to support REAL LIFE in so many ways over the years.

But more than what he gave, I will always be grateful for what he taught me. Jim shared so many wonderful lessons, so much wisdom, and always took the time to encourage and mentor me.

The last time I saw him was over lunch with him and Bobbie. We laughed watching the robot waiter, I got to hear about their amazing fried chicken recipe, and somehow we ended up talking about why they decided to put a bank inside their grocery store. That was Jim…. there was always something to learn, a story to hear, and wisdom in the conversation.

Jim was truly one of a kind, and so is Bobbie. I will miss him beyond belief. I am forever grateful that he believed in REAL LIFE before there was much to believe in, and even more grateful for his mentorship, friendship, and love.

What an incredible legacy he leaves behind.
