Meet Us Monday: Jobs for Life

Up first is one of our Mark L. Wheless REAL LIFE Champion of the Year Award recipients, Jobs for Life, a faith-based organization that connects Christian businessmen with men in recovery, helping them discover career goals, learn to budget their money, and plan for their future.

John, who has been serving with Jobs for Life for years, says they strive to help in practical ways. “We help each man formulate and practice his unique ‘elevator speech,’ and how to answer difficult questions from potential employers about their felony convictions.”

In addition to sharing a meal with the men each week, the volunteers use a curriculum that guides meaningful conversations while providing practical tools participants can continue using long after the sessions end.

The Jobs for Life leaders strive to dig deeper than answers on a page. John shares, “Everyone has a dream. We encourage their dream, and help them define it, shape it, and flesh it out. We talk a lot about the abundant life (John 10:10) and what it might look like for them individually.”

One of the newer volunteers, Mark, says, “It is not easy for many of these men. So many of these men show desire to improve, courage, thoughtfulness and fortitude and it becomes evident with each meeting.”

Sarah, REAL LIFE Founder and Director, says, “The continued investment in these men and in this mission is a true testament to the character, faith, and servant leadership of the entire team. The impact of Jobs for Life extends far beyond the program itself, leaving a lasting difference in the lives of so many individuals.”

Another newer volunteer, Rob, says, “Jobs for Life aims to be one more way that the broader REAL LIFE program supports and encourages a person to build their life back up, a life that brings security and joy.”
