Why REAL LIFE Industries Every day, individuals across our community are searching for a pathway forward. Many have the potential to succeed but lack access to stable relationships, meaningful work, and the support needed to overcome barriers created by violence, incarceration, addiction, trauma, and chronic unemployment. REAL LIFE Industries bridges that gap by combining belonging, workforce development, paid training, and long-term support within one integrated model. We intentionally serve individuals who are often overlooked, underestimated, and left behind, providing the relationships, support, and opportunities needed to move forward. The model already works. For nearly a decade, REAL LIFE has walked alongside individuals as they overcome barriers, rebuild their lives, and secure more than 1,000 jobs. Inspired by the pioneering work of Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles, REAL LIFE Industries will establish a comprehensive workforce development and social enterprise model designed specifically for Richmond and surrounding communities.
How Transformation Happens REAL LIFE Industries is built on a simple belief: lasting change happens when people experience belonging, have someone to walk alongside them, and are given realistic opportunities to succeed. Employment alone does not create transformation. Sustainable change occurs when work is paired with hope, belonging, accountability, trusted relationships, and people willing to walk alongside participants through setbacks and successes. Many of the individuals REAL LIFE Industries seeks to serve have never experienced a stable environment where they are expected to grow, supported when they struggle, and celebrated when they succeed. To translate this belief into practice, REAL LIFE Industries will guide participants through a structured three-phase model designed to move individuals from instability toward long-term employment and economic mobility.
The Fairmount Center: A Place to Belong The Fairmount Center will serve individuals who are at risk. They are rarely noticed, let alone chosen. As the hub of REAL LIFE Industries, the Center will bringing workforce development, coaching, education, social enterprise, and community together under one roof. Located on Fairmount Avenue in Church Hill, it will provide individualized coaching, paid training, employer connections, and real-world experience through social enterprises, including a coffee shop, roastery, screen printing operation, and future business ventures. By walking alongside individuals who have too often been overlooked, underestimated, and left behind, REAL LIFE Industries creates pathways to long-term employment and stability.
