Yesterday, the REAL LIFE staff took a pause. REAL LIFE is fortunate to be an organization that recognizes the importance of stepping away from busy schedules to come together and reflect on how staff are doing as people, not just as workers.
The training, Impact of Trauma Exposure on Professionals, led by Greater Richmond SCAN’s Joe Feldman, focused on something that is easy to overlook in this field. REAL LIFE staff are often exposed to other people’s trauma, and over time, that can impact them emotionally, psychologically, and even physically.
Staff members spent time identifying personal stressors and talking honestly about how this work affects them. A meaningful part of the conversation centered on those in recovery, and how hearing others’ experiences can sometimes reconnect them to parts of their own past and trauma.
The group also discussed ways to manage that stress in real, practical ways. This includes getting outside, exercising, eating well, getting enough sleep, staying connected to others, and being willing to set boundaries so they are not overextending themselves. All of it plays a role in preventing burnout and helping staff stay fully present in both their personal and professional lives.
As Melissa, Recovery Navigator, shared, “Self Care is critical. Check in with yourself daily. Let go of trying to save everyone and just focus on guiding people who are willing to do the work!”
Staff left with a clearer understanding of how to care for themselves in this work. Thank you to Greater Richmond SCAN for the thoughtful training!
