Meet Us Monday: Sam, Peer House Leader
Posted: February 23, 2026 | Author: Real Life Staff
This week we are excited to introduce one of our Peer House Leaders, Sam G!
Sam was born in California to two parents serving in the military. When he was ten, his family moved to Virginia, where he has remained. As a teenager, Sam experienced the sudden loss of his mother, began using substances, and eventually left high school.
His substance use eventually led to incarceration. After a previous attempt at recovery, Sam relapsed while caring for his father during his battle with cancer. When his father passed away, the cycle continued. Eventually, he found his way to REAL LIFE and he truly hit the ground running.
Today, Sam works full time in construction, attends all program classes, serves as a Peer House Leader, and is working toward obtaining his GED. He has been a Peer House Leader for over three months and is thriving in his role as a leader. “It was something I knew I was capable of, but I never stepped up and did it,” says Sam. “I try to lead by example.”
Outside of work and the program, Sam enjoys reading fiction, playing guitar, and riding his motorcycle when he can. He is especially proud of his daughter, who lives in Virginia and is building a successful life of her own. He also remains close with his sister in California, who has been a steady source of encouragement. Sam hopes to pursue a PRS (Peer Recovery Specialist) Certification.
“I practice gratitude,” Sam continues, “I’m really grateful for everything REAL LIFE is doing for me.” Sam, we are grateful to be a part of your journey and we look forward to continuing to be witness to your growth.
