National Volunteer Week Spotlight: Teachers and Tutors

Jeff teaches the Jobs for Life Class and recently wrapped up a powerful five-week cycle at one of our REAL houses. He walked alongside Lifers through job interviews, DMV visits, car troubles, and the challenges of rebuilding. He helped them rediscover forgotten dreams and find the courage to share them. One Lifer said, “I was always told not to share my dreams. But everyone was listening and encouraging, so I shared mine. These guys were really happy for me.”

Larisa and Victor are transforming lives through digital literacy. Since October 2023, Larisa has led 64 Technology Classes, covering practical skills like using the GRTC bus line, job searching on Indeed, and communicating through Gmail. Lifers often attend multiple sessions to build comfort and confidence.

Victor offers one-on-one tech support each week at the REAL LIFE Community Center. Whether it’s submitting job applications, checking bus routes, or learning how to navigate a smartphone, he answers every question with patience and care.

As Kristina, our Education Navigator, shared: “They are generous with their time, kindness, and patience. Many Lifers walk away smiling after a tech light bulb moment because of them.”

Volunteers like Jeff, Larisa, and Victor don’t just show up—they reignite possibility. Their leadership, support, and kindness create space for growth and transformation, reminding Lifers that their dreams are valid and their futures are worth fighting for.
