As spring emerges in Virginia, we are excited to continue our series on REAL LIFE families reuniting. After years of struggling with substance use disorder and drifting in and out of her son’s and family’s lives, our Recovery Navigator Karen is thrilled to be reunited with them!

Her son is now 16, and she has been in recovery for almost four years! This time has allowed Karen opportunities to make up for lost time and learn how to be fully present in his life. “I am constantly rebuilding our relationship, and our bond is stronger than ever.”

Completing a nine-month recovery program, becoming a Peer Recovery Specialist, and stepping into a role as a project coordinator in recovery has been an incredible transformation! And her family couldn’t be more proud.

“Working with the women in our program has been more than just an opportunity to guide others—it has been a vital part of my own healing journey. As I walk alongside these women in their different stages of recovery, I am reminded daily of the strength it takes to rebuild, to face the past with courage, and to believe in the possibility of a new future.”

Today, her family is closer than ever. “We share laughter, love, and support, and they see me happy, thriving, and embracing a future filled with purpose. Today, I get to be a mother, a sister, a daughter, and an aunt. I get to plan for my son’s future and to cherish every moment we share. My heart is full, and my life is one of gratitude and hope.”

Karen, we are so encouraged by your story! We look forward to seeing you continue to develop a deeper connection with your family.
