Over the course of six weeks, six of our staff members in recovery participated in golf lessons with First Tee Richmond, embracing a new challenge in their recovery journey. “Our vision is to strengthen the character of our community through golf,” says Lauren, First Tee’s Chief of Staff. ” The saying, ‘the opposite of addiction is connection,’ captures the spirit of this partnership. We see golf as a way to foster community and connection and offer space where individuals can feel valued and supported. It takes a lot of focus and patience and resilience to golf and it kind of mirrors the recovery journey.”
Deshawn, a REAL LIFE graduate and current staff member, found the experience deeply meaningful. “Playing on a recovery team made me realize how far I’ve come! At the REAL LIFE Golf Tournament, I thought, ‘Wow, I was homeless two years ago. Look where I am now!’” Deshawn also appreciated the opportunity to strengthen bonds with his Project SAF colleagues. “It helped me get to know my peers better, building a stronger foundation for our work together in the community,” he reflected.
This partnership with First Tee Richmond, made possible through Henrico County, provided our team with both connection and skill-building in a supportive environment—a powerful experience as they continue their journeys in recovery. Thank you First Tee and Henrico County for providing these men with an unforgettable experience!
