Meet Us Monday: Tommy, Peer House Leader

Posted: March 4, 2024 | Author: Real Life Staff

Born in Richmond, Tommy was raised in Alabama. It was difficult at times, due to his mother’s addiction, and to escape he found himself sneaking out to experiment with drugs at a young age. He’s held various jobs over the years including sales and fraud investigation, often while in active addiction. In the past, he tried an outpatient program but when he hit a few bumps in the road, he found himself turning to drugs again. Following incarceration, he found out about the REAL LIFE program and decided to try it. He was skeptical at first, planning on finishing the six months and then going back to his previous life-style. However, once he started working the program, he started feeling really good about himself and more hopeful about a future without substances. He enjoys living in a REAL house and being around like-minded people who are also trying to find a new way to live. When asked why he accepted the position to be a Peer House Leader, he says, “holding other people accountable helps me hold myself accountable.” He says he tries to lead by example; he goes to work, does his chores, works the program and expects the other guys to do the same.

He currently works as a carpenter, renovating and rehabilitating various houses and buildings in Richmond. He attended REAL LIFE graduation in November with the physical support of his sister and virtual support of his grandmother. Tommy is feeling a lot of peace in the program and plans to stay for the near future to continue to work on his recovery. Leaning on his life experiences, Tommy is hoping to move into the recovery profession soon. He hopes to encourage others with the same hope that he was given through this program. He is also looking forward to becoming an uncle in the very near future. Congratulations, Tommy! Your drive towards a flourishing life motivates us!
