Family Sunday: Harrison

Continuing our family reunification series, we are excited to highlight Harrison. Harrison is a REAL LIFE alum and also works with REAL LIFE as a Recovery Navigator through Recovery Corps.

Growing up, Harrison idolized his big brother, Branch. He was more than a brother—he was a protector and role model. “I always felt that I had a protector when I was younger, and as we both got older, he became a role model that I looked to as a guide for navigating life successfully.” They bonded over lacrosse, holiday traditions, and shared accomplishments and adventures.

However, in their twenties and thirties, Substance Use Disorder created distance between these two brothers and dear friends. “I had created a canyon between us due to active alcoholism … I had isolated myself.” Though Branch tried to help, trust was lost, and their relationship faded.

A turning point came in January of last year with sobriety and support from REAL LIFE and Harrison’s other support systems. “My brother and I have slowly begun to speak more… I know this is the beginning of the restoration of our relationship and I am very hopeful that it will continue to improve as I stay sober and continue on the path that I am on now.”

Harrison also received great news recently: he no longer has Interlock, an in-car alcohol monitoring system, in his car! With this new freedom, Harrison also got a new car. Congratulations!

Harrison is looking forward to the future: filled with trips to Lynchburg to visit his brother and holidays together again – and building more wonderful memories like the one in this family photo from long ago. Harrison, we are so proud of you and the strength you’ve shown, and we celebrate this beautiful reconnection with your brother!
