The holidays can be tough for those in recovery, often bringing up memories of loss, trauma, and substance use. For one Lifer, Jennifer, this season marked her first holiday season in recovery.
Jennifer felt stressed this holiday season: attempting to prioritize her sobriety while also spending quality time with her family. As she continues to rebuild her financial situation, she is deeply grateful for REAL LIFE’s Angel Tree, which provided her children with beautiful, personalized gifts to make their holiday special. While she was happy to be able to give gifts to her children this year, Jennifer noted the greatest gift she can give to her kids is time—being present, laughing, and creating meaningful new traditions like baking or watching movies together. Reflecting on her holiday, Jennifer says, “our holiday was absolutely beautiful. The joy in the kids’ eyes was worth everything to me.”
For Jennifer, connection has been key to staying clean. Leaning on a trusted circle of friends has provided the support needed to prioritize safety and sobriety. Setting boundaries, managing expectations, and avoiding risky situations have been vital lessons for Jennifer during her recovery journey and they have been important for her to remember during this holiday season.
Although the holidays presented challenges, this season marked the first of many sober celebrations for Jennifer. We are honored to witness her journey and the hope and grace she brings to it.
