Jail Programming

Providing tools and services to those who are incarcerated to build their resilience and prepare them for release

Our initial program was in the Richmond City Justice Center (jail) and grew into the community based upon the need we continued to see for those who were released. However, we continue to provide programming in local jails through two avenues.

We provide weekly programming services in jails that we contract with. This utilizes the REAL LIFE model, including the curriculum and recovery support services, as well as direct re-entry related preparation.  Other facilities will purchase our curriculum and implement the program on their own.

The program in the jail consists of 22 topic areas of discussion and engagement.

The curriculum digs deep and allows the participant to go through modules that address subjects such as trauma, healthy parenting, and relationships. These are some of the topics that weigh the heaviest on participants’ hearts. Allowing them to read and journal their thoughts is a means of healing and causing them to face trauma experiences that have gone unaddressed. These neglected issues are often the cause of addiction and/or criminal behavior.

A highlight of this course is the peer support that is birthed out of this. There are components of the curriculum that are discussed during class and allows participants to share and discuss. This results in a common thread of understanding engulfed in laughter and tears. It also results in participants encouraging and admonishing one another. The module book also has a “safe space.” A place where they are able to journal and keep to themselves. The journaling section is the private section that provokes thoughts and opens the door to reflective thinking and meditation. It is in this place, the personal space, where they face their obstacles head-on.

With behavioral modification at the forefront, the curriculum educates participants and provides the additional support needed to change negative thinking patterns and behavior. Once thinking is changed, a change in behavior follows suit. All of this prepares the individual with the skills needed on the path of recovery, a life void of drugs and negative thinking patterns which are all needed for a thriving and fulfilled life!
