For this week’s #MeetUsMonday, we’re introducing you to Lifer (and graduate) AJ Johnson! Since 2014, AJ aimed to get clean but was in and out of jails and institutions until 2019. Afterwards, he still struggled. It wasn’t until a year ago that AJ began his walk in freedom from substance use. Understanding his need for God while fearing loss of his family brought him to a decision that changed his life. “It’s this feeling inside of you…I was done, I had had enough.” AJ credits the Lord for his life today and rests in his growing relationship with Him. “If it wasn’t for God, I wouldn’t be here now. He saved my life a couple of times. He gave me 2,3,4, or 5 chances.” Chances to not only live life, but life to the full.
AJ is also deeply grateful for his family. Many relationships are being mended and rebuilt on trust. “No one is waiting for me to crash and fall again anymore which has been a huge milestone.” His mom and dad look forward to seeing him regularly. Their calls are no longer transactional or pitying. He has a wonderful relationship with his wife, Tammy, and stepson, Jeff. His 13 year-old son, Elijah, who lives with his mom in Myrtle Beach, visits frequently. Elijah calls him dad and tells AJ he loves him. His sister, Jamila, now calls and hangs out. AJ has had his struggles and faults in relationships, but has grown in how he resolves conflict and seeks unity. When the whole family goes to Myrtle Beach in August, AJ will “be straight headed for the first time on vacation.” This will be an achievement to cherish and take in for him.
REAL LIFE has given AJ hope through it all. After having been in the program initially, AJ relapsed and fell back into incarceration; however, his Pathway Navigator never gave up hope and welcomed him back to REAL LIFE when he was ready. AJ learned the tools and received the support he needed, including helping him secure a job and regain his confidence. Now, AJ is a lead cook who opens two locations and is being trained for management. He wakes up looking forward to work. And, on a higher level, he is “looking forward to what else life has to offer on this side of the fence.”
