Posted: April 22, 2024 | Author: Real Life Staff
REAL LIFE would like to extend a warm welcome to our new Peer House Leader, Dyer! Dyer grew up in Virginia and was a track athlete in high school and college. He graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in personal finance. He married, had two girls and moved to the West Coast.
Years later, Dyer and his wife divorced and his drinking habits to become excessive. He spent over a decade in a cycle of recognizing his need to stop drinking, experiencing sobriety, and then, convinced he was better and could handle alcohol, drinking again. He experienced a lot of difficulty during his active addiction including joblessness and homelessness, and he eventually ended up back in Virginia and entered REAL LIFE. He excelled in the program and recently graduated.
One of the aspects that he enjoys most about REAL LIFE is the wraparound services. “REAL LIFE seems to be more compassionate. They are not just focused on being clean and sober, but on recreating your life. They take a holistic interest in your life.”
He is currently enjoying his job with Lowes, and he is planning on getting his CDL (Commercial Driving License) certification so that he can eventually drive big rigs. He has reconnected with his parents, and he is hoping to reconnect with his daughters soon. Dyer has had 10 months of sobriety and his future is looking bright! “I looked at myself in the mirror last week and I didn’t recognize the guy I saw. This is a person I haven’t been in decades.” Congratulations, Dyer!
